[February 2025] What Are Shopify’s New Login Method “New Customer Accounts”?

Introduction

In this article, we introduce the newly added login method called “New Customer Accounts” in Shopify.

What are “New Customer Accounts”?

“New Customer Accounts” is a new login method that allows users to log in without entering a password.

Previously, Shopify only provided the method of logging in using a combination of an email address and password as shown in the image below.

With New Customer Accounts, passwords are no longer required, and users will only be asked to enter an email address. Shopify will then send a 6-digit one-time authentication code to the provided email address, which is needed to log in.

Please note that the login and account management pages will use the “shopify.com” domain, rather than your store’s domain. Unlike the previous login page, this new one cannot be customized.

How to Activate New Customer Accounts

You can enable New Customer Accounts in your Store settings by clicking “Edit” in the upper right of “Customer accounts” -> “Accounts in online store and checkout”.

Benefits of New Customer Accounts

Customers No Longer Need to Handle Passwords

With New Customer Accounts, your customers no longer need to manage passwords. This makes it effortless for customers who regularly create unique passwords at every registration. Furthermore, customers no longer have to worry about forgetting their password or having it stolen.

Easier Order Tracking

New Customer Accounts offer an order confirmation screen as shown below. Customers can now track deliveries, easily reorder, and even request returns. Previously, many stores had to provide these features through customized apps, but these capabilities being offered as standard Shopify features is a significant benefit.

Disadvantages of New Customer Accounts

Logging In Might Feel Cumbersome

Customers will have to check the authentication code sent via email each time they log in, potentially requiring switching between different apps. Customers who previously had smooth logins using password managers may find the new login method cumbersome, so exercise caution.

Limited Supported Apps

If you have previously implemented customizations related to login or account screens, most likely, these customizations will not be supported by New Customer Accounts. Particularly, account screens that previously were customizable and displayed on your store domain will now appear on the “shopify.com” domain, making customizations via apps or Liquid impossible. Stores that already have customizations need to be particularly mindful about this limitation.

As of February 2025, the number of apps that support New Customer Accounts is increasing. MF Account is one such app, allowing you to extend the profile page for New Customer Accounts by adding editable fields. This functionality enables you to collect user data such as ‘Birthdays’ and ‘Clothing Sizes,’ previously achievable only through “traditional customer accounts.” This app is recommended for stores that feel limited by the default profile features of New Customer Accounts.
